PBIS Explained
We are trying to implement a strong PBIS Program at GBES. PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) is an evidence-based, multi-tiered framework used in schools to create a positive, predictable, and safe learning environment for all students. Rather than focusing on punishment, PBIS emphasizes teaching positive behavior, reinforcing desired actions, and providing targeted support for students with more significant needs. This proactive approach improves students' social, emotional, and academic success and contributes to a better overall school climate.
Key Aspects of PBIS
- Prevention over Punishment
- PBIS focuses on preventing problem behaviors by teaching what is expected.
- Teaching and Reinforcing
- Schools define, teach, and reinforce positive behaviors in a common language understood by everyone.
- A Tiered Framework
- PBIS provides a continuum of support, with universal strategies for all students (Tier 1), targeted interventions for groups (Tier 2), and individualized support for students with significant needs (Tier 3).
- Data-Driven Decisions
- Data is used to guide the selection and implementation of practices to improve behavior.
- School-Wide Culture
- PBIS fosters a safe, respectful, and positive school climate that benefits students, teachers, and the entire school community.
